I don't read Sally Rooney for the plot
Sally Rooney writing is kind of like she’s actively refusing to perform for the reader, and to be honest it feels very different and unconventional. Her plots can be weirdly understated and even borderline unbelievable.
But that’s not why I read her books. Because while the stories themselves feel questionable, the way she captures human relationships is painfully, embarrassingly real. The awkwardness, miscommunication and power imbalances.
She’s not writing realism in the “this would definitely happen exactly like this” sense. She’s writing emotional realism. And I think as a reader, it makes me feel aware as a person, and even grateful.
