HIDDEN IN MOUNT APO 🌿 A Philippine endemic flower first…

HIDDEN IN MOUNT APO 🌿

A Philippine endemic flower first collected in Mount Apo in 1904 has been documented in the protected area once again—after 122 years.

DENR Davao Region, through the Protected Area Management Office–Mount Apo Natural Park, identified the tiny flowering plant as Ophiorrhiza biflora during a routine wildlife-monitoring activity.

The monitoring team encountered the species while retrieving camera traps along a forest trail. Its small bloom stood out among the vegetation, leading to its careful examination and identification.

Ophiorrhiza biflora was first collected in Mount Apo in October 1904 by American botanist Edwin Bingham Copeland. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family, which also includes coffee, gardenia, mussaenda, and santan.

While the species has also been recorded in Benguet and Negros, the Mount Apo specimen marks its first successful photographic documentation in the park.

This discovery confirms that a Philippine endemic species documented in Mount Apo more than a century ago continues to survive within its forests.

It is a reminder that protecting natural habitats does more than preserve landscapes—it gives species, histories, and scientific discoveries the chance to endure.
