Thinking of switching to a Mac Mini for Photo Editing/Management
So back story… I’ve always used Macs… since my first family computer in the mid 90s.
I’ve been using photoshop since 1996ish. When Lightroom came out I used it for about a year until Aperture came out and I used it well past its discontinuation date. When Aperture stopped working in 10.15, I started switching back to Lightroom (and I’ve never really liked LR), and I sort of got out of photography beyond my iPhone. Earlier this year I started taking pictures again and I started back with an Adobe subscription, but I’m already getting tired of paying Adobe. I purchased the Affinity suite and I’m working on getting used to using it. Lately I’ve also been seeing an awful lot of good reviews about how great Photomator is but it’s Mac only.
My primary machine currently is an HP z440 which is in the process of being replaced with a pretty high end (power sucking) z8. The main purpose of having such a machine is ripping DVDs and Blu-ray’s. I have a 2015 MBP, but its last OS supported is 4 years old now and I really only use it occasionally anymore as I prefer a desktop.
I currently shoot with a 5DMKIII and want to buy a full-frame mirrorless camera next year, so a higher end machine wouldn’t be in the picture until at least 2027. I know a couple of people who use a Mac Mini for photo editing and they find it keeps up with pretty much anything they throw at it. One of them is even using a base model (with only a RAM upgrade) and in LR he processes 45MP CR3 RAWs with no noticeable slowdown compared to his old camera’s 22MP CR2 RAWs.
Are any of you using Photomator and Pixelmator or Affinity on a M4 Mac Mjni and if so what are your thoughts?
TLDR: Lifelong Mac user, currently using a PC. Trying to decide if I should switch back to a Mac workflow with an M4 Mac Mini & Photomator.
