Saudi Arabia shut its East-West Pipeline as a precaution…

Saudi Arabia shut its East-West Pipeline as a precaution after a drone attack, the Associated Press reported Friday. 🛢️ The crude-oil route carries oil from the kingdom’s eastern fields to its Red Sea export facilities at Yanbu.

The shutdown coincided with Houthi advances around the Bab el-Mandeb, a key shipping passage linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The developments added pressure to oil transport routes in and around the Arabian Peninsula.

The pipeline, also called Petroline, is important because it can move crude overland to the Red Sea rather than relying on the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. energy data puts its normal capacity at 5 million barrels a day, with temporary expansion to 7 million barrels a day when needed.

The precautionary closure highlights that alternative export infrastructure can reduce dependence on one maritime chokepoint without eliminating regional transport risk. ⚠️ Saudi authorities and Aramco had not publicly detailed the duration of the September shutdown in the supplied reporting.
