A fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences’ newborn nursery in Islamabad killed 14 babies on 26 August, officials said. 🕯️ At least 15 newborns had been in the nursery, and one was rescued, according to the Associated Press.
The fire was reported in the Mother and Child Health Centre’s gynaecology ward. Islamabad authorities said firefighters and ambulances responded, brought the blaze under control and moved children to intensive care.
PIMS is Islamabad’s largest public hospital and a regional referral and teaching complex with 1,254 reported beds across five clinical hospitals. Its Mother and Child Health Centre has 156 beds and includes a neonatal nursery.
Authorities have formed a multi-agency committee to examine the cause and spread of the fire, the adequacy of fire-safety measures and the emergency response. The early accounts of an air-conditioning compressor explosion or short circuit are not final investigative findings. 🚒
