Hello everyone, I need some help with a situation, please.
I am an international student temporarily living in Germany. I arrived in November 2025 and will stay until the end of May this year (7 months in total). In November, I completed the Anmeldung because my partner needed the Steuer-ID in order to work here. As a result, my name was registered for the Rundfunkbeitrag. In January, I received my first letter from them informing me that I had been registered in the system and confirming my address. In March, I received another letter charging me €110.18 for 6 months of fees, to be paid by the 15th of the same month. I wasn’t in Berlin at the time and only saw the letter when I returned on the 17th. I registered my bank account authorizing automatic debit, but so far the amount has not been withdrawn. I’m now worried about owing money to the German authorities, as I don’t want any legal problems.
If I leave the country without paying, could I be prevented from returning in the future? Could they charge my landlord and have her deduct it from my security deposit?
