🌊 The Copernicus Climate Change Service said the daily average sea-surface temperature outside polar regions reached 21.1°C on 22 August, a new record for its series.
The figure narrowly exceeded the previous 21.09°C daily high set in March 2024. An August record is unusual because the global extra-polar ocean normally peaks around March or April.
The Copernicus measure averages sea-surface temperatures across ocean between 60°S and 60°N, excluding polar waters affected by seasonal sea ice. It is based on the ERA5 reanalysis dataset.
A strengthening El Niño is adding heat to oceans already warmed over decades by human-driven climate change. Warmer seas can increase marine-heatwave risks, disrupt fisheries and ecosystems, and add heat and moisture to some storm and rainfall systems. 🌡️
Scientists will watch whether the new daily peak proves brief or signals a longer period of exceptional ocean warmth.
