The Carnival of Haiti (called "Mardi Gras" or "Kanaval" in Creole) is one of the most anticipated events in the country. This cultural event usually takes place during the month of February in the capital or in other cities of Haiti. Each time, the carnival is organized according to a specific theme. In 2016, the theme of the carnival was "Ayiti Toutan" and it took place from Sunday to Tuesday February 9. n Carnival days in Haiti are an opportunity for the people to free themselves from any social hierarchy while partying in the streets. During the festivities, the inhabitants have the opportunity to dress up in traditional costumes but also in characters from the popular culture of the country such as the wandering Jew, the Chaloskas (representation of the tyrannical policeman Charles Oscar Étienne), the Zel Matirins (dressed in angels of Satan), zombies or the Loas, characters from voodoo. n The Haitian carnival also allows you to hear many musical groups with different styles. The rara is one of them. This kind of popular music generally begins on the last day of carnival and includes many religious rites, including voodoo.
