Why aren’t there more light weight sport touring and/or belt drive bikes?
My first bike is a 2012 F800ST and I absolutely love it. It hits so many notes well:
- relatively light (450lbs wet) and flickable in the city
- torquey 85hp with 60mpg, killer in the twisties with some drop in suspension bits
- bigger than a sportbike despite its low weight, fits me comfortably at 6’3” with a passenger
- light touring capable with clip on luggage and an integrated rack on back
- amenities like heated grips
- low center of gravity via underseat gas tank
- belt drive which means no chain maintenance but much less power loss and weight gain vs a shaft
- bonus: doesn’t look like a robot bug
This to me is the ultimate package and I don’t understand why bikes like it aren’t more popular. If I could have this with slightly more power and adjustable suspension I’d be buried with it.
Everything available as an upgrade is either a smaller sportbike, extremely heavy, a jacked up adventure bike that trades off carving ability or some combination of the above.
What gives? And why not more sporty belt drives? I feel like I have to stick with this guy forever or face big trade offs. Moto Guzzi V100 Mandelo, Z1000SX, or Ducati SS with luggage seem closest.
