The common “maya” birds widely seen across the Philippines are actually Eurasian Tree Sparrows, an introduced species believed to have arrived in the country during the Spanish period. Historians believe the birds may have been brought aboard galleon ships during early trade routes.
Over the years, the Eurasian Tree Sparrow became one of the most familiar birds in the Philippines and is now commonly referred to by Filipinos as “maya.”
