A glacier collapse on the Nepal–Tibet border triggered catastrophic debris floods that have killed nearly 600 people and left almost 2,000 missing, according to reports on Friday. 🌊 The Red Cross said at least 93,000 people had been affected.
The collapse sent water, mud, rock and ice down Himalayan valleys, destroying homes, power facilities, roads and bridges. The UN said more than 40 bridges were destroyed or badly damaged and more than 40km of road was wiped out.
Rescue teams briefly halted work after a lake formed by debris overflowed, raising the risk of further flooding. Many hard-hit areas remain reachable only by helicopter, while residents have again been told to evacuate.
Hundreds of foreign visitors were among those reported missing in a region used by trekkers and pilgrims. 🚁 Authorities are continuing searches and relief work, while casualty and missing-person figures remain provisional.
