Transportation/walking infrastructure in Miami is a disgrace
I'm sure I'm saying nothing new, but after years of visiting Miami I really gotta vent. For context I'm from New York and visit family here frequently. We New Yorkers love complaining about our own public transportation, but it seems we are light years ahead of most of the USA. Back to Miami, what can I say? it's an embarrassment. Nothing seems to have changed for the better, as far as I can tell, since I started visiting here about 15 years ago. Infrastructure here is wholly car dependent, and walking infrastructure is non existent, other than thin strips of sidewalk for getting to and from parking. I went out to eat the other day at one of these small outdoor strips with a few restaurants in it. There's marginal room for parking and right behind the cars are outdoor restaurant seats. How's that enjoyable for a view?
It's pretty funny seeing bike lanes on these ginormous highways to and from the Miami Beach areas, I don't think I've ever seen more than one or two bikers in all my years coming here. Who would risk it? Overall this place seems like a dysjointed patchwork of half baked transportation projects. Even car infrastructure doesn't make sense. Eg parking by Miami Beach is almost non existent. Traffic is almost as bad as in New York. So overall, public transportation is non existent, and driving here is a nightmare. I guess my question is, why dont things change here? Is there public pressure to improve things?
Ps for anyone taking this personally, I'm not dunking on Miami. I love the vibe, the people are friendly and unlike New Yorkers, don't honk, and of course weather is great. Just wish transportation was better. #local source
