Nepal–Tibet floods caused by a glacial collapse have left 392 people confirmed dead and 1,468 missing, according to reporting on 28 August. 🌊
USGS preliminary analysis says the collapse near Lāngtāng Lirung sent a debris flow and flood nearly 100 km through river valleys toward communities in Nepal and China.
The emergency has damaged roads and bridges and complicated searches in remote areas. The IFRC estimates about 93,000 people may have been affected and has launched a CHF 25 million appeal. 🚑
Authorities are also warning of a new threat: debris has dammed rivers and formed lakes. China forecast about 3 million cubic metres of inflow into one lake over three days, raising the risk that it could breach downstream. ⚠️
