Verhoeven's direction in Total Recall extends beyond the action sequences. The director of (ROBOCOP) gives it his own touch, successfully creating a somewhat surreal atmosphere that contrasts with the bright super-technological future that awaits the human race with its dark consequences. The futuristic settings of Earth and the Mars colony are very good, in addition to having excellent special effects in a time that did not yet know CGI technology. The director pays meticulous attention to funny details, incorporating futuristic products (like "Mars Today" ads) as well as inside jokes and pop culture references.
