You bring up the old "nature vs nuture" question?
My old school [in the UK] had a flourishing Music Department which encouraged all students to learn an instrument. Classical music was introduced, taught and played.
During our late teens, a contemporary, who was an accomplished acoustic guitarist and liked rock 'n' roll, formed a Beatles tribute band. As one music master said "he's the sort of student we like." 44 years on, he still plays acoustic and electric guitars and has a band. What might have been the outcome had he attended a different school?

When I was younger, I remember music being an integral part of schooling, but as time passed, the importance of studying music decreased and then all but disappeared in American schools. I'm sure you understand this well, being in California, if I remember correctly. Have a great Sunday! ☀️
Studies have shown that young people who study music perform better, academically. I suspect that "nice-to-have" programs/subjects are the first to be cut when budgets are tight.
