I was driving home Sunday night when I got sideswiped by a small SUV on my rear passenger side. I haven't been hit while driving in my 30 years behind the wheel. What was more shocking, was that he immediately tried to take off, swerving over into the opposite turn lane to get around the 2 cars in front of us.
The adrenaline kicked in and I did exactly what they tell you not to do, I pursued him to get his vehicle info. I followed him about a half mile up the main road before he turned into a neighborhood. I got on the phone with 911 just as he appeared to be pulling over after several blocks; I was flashing my lights at him the whole time. Instead, he did a 3 point turn and sped off in the opposite direction, but not before I was able to give the color, make, model, plate #, and his description to the 911 operator.
Since I had his info, I pulled over and the cops came to take the report. I got home about 15 mins after they left and got a call from an officer saying that they used his vehicle info to get his address, went to his house, and there he was, in the driveway with corresponding damage to his front driver's side.
They said he was "special needs" and didn't go into detail about it. It is is mom's vehicle and his story was that he was swerving to avoid a scooter that had cut him off (I didn't see one) and was unaware he hit anyone. It was a significant impact. There is ZERO CHANCE he didn't know he hit someone and it doesn't explain why he took off.
Regardless, the officer cited him for the accident itself, but not for fleeing the scene! There were no injuries and the car is drivable, so I don't think there's much I can do about that. Thankfully he has insurance with a major carrier, so I'm hoping this gets fixed with little fuss, though I'm interested to see if they try and skimp on the repairs. #fun source
