What is Zafindraony?
At the moment, I'm in the town of Ambositra for a funeral. In the video you can hear people singing the Zafindraony. But what is Zafindraony?
Indeed, one of the specialties of the Betsileo ethnic group is Zafindraony music. The origins of this style of Betsileo music date back to the arrival of Christianity in Madagascar. What is certain is that Zafindraony was born with the adoption of Gospel music by the Malagasy in general after the establishment of Christian churches in the nineteenth century.
Tonight, where I am, singular songs will be sung. They will be sung all night in the form of a joust: one group sings in the house where the deceased is, another group sings in the adjoining house, and a final group sings outside. These songs are called zafindraony.
