Keyboard double/multiple input issue # So around…

Keyboard double/multiple input issue

# So around April/May, this problem started. Every time I use my PC, my keyboard randomly starts producing a double typing/multiple typing error. A single key press gets registered as two or even three presses.

Example:

testing -> ttesting
testing -> teesting
checking -> checkkking

It happens completely randomly. Sometimes I can use the PC for several hours before it starts, and other times it begins after only **30 minutes to 1 hour**. Once it starts, it begins with only a few words having double letters, but over time it gets worse until almost every key I press ends up being duplicated or tripled.

My original keyboard (an **MMA mechanical keyboard**) is around **2–3 years old**, so naturally my first thought was that it was simply wearing out. I actually kept using it until June because I mostly scrolled through things and didn't type very much. But when I started studying programming again (I'm a computer science major), I couldn't ignore it anymore. Imagine trying to write code when every few keystrokes you have to stop and delete extra letters. Even a small typo is a huge problem when coding.

So in early **July**, I bought a brand-new **AULA wired keyboard**. I used it for a few hours before the exact same keyboard problem appeared again. At that point I thought, "There's no way this new keyboard is already defective." I bought it brand new from a physical mall, not online. I switched back to my old keyboard and it still produced the same error. I switched back to the new one, and the exact same keyboard error happened again.

My first thought was that maybe my operating system had become corrupted. So I tried booting into a **live Ubuntu USB** using one of my spare USB drives. The exact same keyboard error still happened in Linux.

At that point I started consulting AI (ChatGPT and Claude). Based on their suggestions, I tried the following:

* Changed the keyboard repeat delay to **Long**
* Changed the keyboard repeat rate to **Slow**
* Moved the keyboard to different rear USB ports
* Moved it to the front panel USB ports
* Updated my motherboard BIOS to the latest version
* Tested again in Linux

In between every one of those tests, I kept switching back and forth between both keyboards. Both of them continued producing the exact same error.

At that point I started suspecting that maybe the problem was my **motherboard, CPU, PSU, or RAM**.

So I switched over to my spare **DDR3 system**. The only things I transferred to that system were my **1250W PSU**, my **SSD**, and both keyboards.

After some time, the exact same keyboard problem appeared again.

This was now happening on an entirely different computer, going from an AM4 platform to a DDR3 platform, yet producing the exact same keyboard error.

One of the AI suggestions was that maybe my PSU wasn't supplying stable enough power. So I replaced my **1250W OCZ PSU** with my spare **350W InPlay PSU**.

The exact same error still happened.

Every one of the first six troubleshooting steps that I performed on my AM4 system, I repeated again on the DDR3 system. Nothing changed. The exact same keyboard error continued happening.

At that point I had no other idea what could possibly be causing this.

Throughout every troubleshooting step, I kept switching between both keyboards to test them. Every single time, they both produced the exact same double/multiple typing error.

So I started thinking maybe Windows itself was the problem. Maybe my installation was corrupted somehow, and maybe that corruption was somehow affecting Linux as well.

Before formatting my drive, I decided to test inside the BIOS.

On my AM4 system, I entered the BIOS and carefully tested using only the arrow keys to see whether they would occasionally register twice.

**They did.**

A single arrow key press would sometimes skip two selections.

I couldn't believe it.

So I moved to my DDR3 system.

**The exact same thing happened inside the BIOS there as well.**

Using only the arrow keys, I was able to reproduce the same double input.

And just to make it clear, I made absolutely sure I wasn't accidentally pressing the keys twice. I've been typing for years.

At that point I completely gave up.

I formatted my SSD.

I deleted every partition, created new ones, and performed a completely clean Windows installation.

I even formatted my HDD as well just to be absolutely sure.

Then I booted into the fresh installation.

The exact same keyboard error happened again.

At that point I started thinking maybe another connected peripheral was somehow affecting the system electrically or something.

So I disconnected everything.

I left only the **keyboard, mouse, and display** connected.

The exact same error still happened.

After that, I started suspecting the mouse.

Since around **April/May**, my mouse had been showing strange behavior too. The cursor would randomly wiggle on its own even when I wasn't touching it. It never clicked by itself or anything like that—it would simply wiggle in place. I thought maybe it had something to do with this whole issue.

So I replaced it with another spare mouse that I had.

The weird cursor movement disappeared completely.

But the keyboard problem still happened exactly the same way.

Keep in mind that during every troubleshooting step I performed, I kept alternating between both keyboards. I wasn't testing only the new keyboard—I kept swapping between the old MMA keyboard and the new AULA keyboard.

And I wasn't only testing on one computer either. I kept switching between both of my systems throughout the entire troubleshooting process.

The exact same issue remained after every single trial.

I've been dealing with this for about **three weeks** now and I genuinely haven't made any progress.

If you're wondering whether it could be my extension cord or wall outlet:

My AM4 system was connected to an extension cord.

My DDR3 system was tested directly from the wall outlet.

So I've ruled that out as well.

At this point, I'm completely out of ideas, which is why I'm posting here.

Neither of my PCs has any other problems whatsoever.

The display works perfectly.

The mouse works normally.

The systems are responsive.

Literally everything else functions perfectly.

The only issue is that the keyboard randomly starts producing double and multiple key inputs.

I'm honestly so tired of dealing with this. I'll be back in school on August and haven't had a chance to practice coding at all (3rd year in college). The keyboard error wasn't a thing on my dd3 system before by the way. That only appeared right after I tested it after my am4 system showed the problem. PLEASE ANYONE, HELP
