BANANAS CAN SPEED UP RIPENING! 🧪🍎
Bananas may look harmless sitting beside other fruits on the table.
But they can quietly change what happens around them.
Bananas release ethylene, a natural plant hormone in gas form. Ethylene is one of the key signals involved in fruit ripening. It helps trigger changes such as softening, sweetness development, color change, aroma production, and the breakdown of starches into sugars.
In simpler terms, bananas can release a ripening signal into the air.
This is why a banana placed near certain fruits may help them ripen faster. Fruits such as mangoes, avocados, and tomatoes, as well as other climacteric fruits, can continue ripening after harvest and respond to ethylene exposure. That is also why people sometimes place unripe fruits in a paper bag with a banana: the bag helps trap ethylene around the fruit, encouraging ripening.
But this is not always a good thing.
If fruits are already ripe, extra ethylene can hasten overripening. What starts as faster ripening can turn into soft spots, browning, stronger odors, texture changes, and faster spoilage. In that case, the banana is no longer helping. It is speeding up the countdown.
This also matters for ethylene-sensitive produce.
Some fruits and vegetables may not “ripen” in the same way bananas do, but they can still react badly to ethylene. Ethylene exposure can shorten storage life or cause unwanted changes such as yellowing, softening, bitterness, or faster quality loss, depending on the produce.
That is why storage matters.
Bananas should not always be kept beside everything else. If you want to ripen an avocado or mango faster, placing it near a banana can help. But if you want fruits and vegetables to last longer, it may be better to separate bananas from ethylene-sensitive produce.
The key is timing.
So the next time a banana sits beside other fruits, remember: it is not just sharing space.
It is releasing a chemical signal.
A tiny gas that can tell nearby produce to ripen faster.
Sometimes, one banana can rush the whole fruit bowl.
