Just finished reading Gerald Clarke’s “Capote”. Great, but…
Why does Harper Lee totally disappear after “In Cold Blood”?
For as thorough as it is in dissecting his fallouts with “the Swans”, and even Cecil Beaton, and Carson McCullers, I was surprised to find that Harper Lee completely exits the book after finishing her research.
Obviously, I could see how this was likely related to her private nature, and I know they did inevitably drift apart—but to have “Mockingbird” referenced only once, and not even go into Capote’s thoughts on her success, strikes me as really odd for a book that literally exhaustingly catalogues every single rehab stay and drunken mishap before his death.
It genuinely is one of the great literary bios, which makes that omission so much odder, imo. #entertainment
