TNWhy is it that pre-1973 oil crisis American V8 engines produced such an impressive number even by 2024 standard?

Big Chrysler New Yorker of the early 1970s had 440 cub in (7.2L) NA V8 that produced upwards of 390hp and 490 lb-ft of torque. A related 413 cub in (6.8L) NA V8 produced same hp but 530 lb-ft of torque. Those are seriously impressive figures even for today. For example, modern Cadillac Escalade's 6.2L A V8 produces like 420hp 460 lb-ft. Ford's massive 7.3L V8 used in Super Duty has 430 hp and 485 lb-ft. 50 years of supposed improved engine technology and the number is still more or less the same.

Even compared to today's turbo-charged small displacement engine these big-old V8 are competitive. New 3.5L T V6 of Infiniti QX80 has 450 hp 516 lb-ft. Highest standard power compared to Escalade, Navigator or LX and the 413 cu in has it beat in terms of torque
