For black history month, I've read The Color Purple and Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. I loved both books, however I was quite surprised and shocked to see that both books started with an incest. Both books at the very first page have a story of a black girl who gets pregnant as a result of an assault by her father. This is such a taboo topic, so I'm sure there's a reason why the two authors decided two put it at the center of their books. Why would they do that? Both books are set at the beginning of the 20th century, do you think this is a problem that affected black American communities at the time? Or did it concern also other ethnicities in more impoverished communities ? Or maybe it affected the whole society, regardless of class and race? #entertainment
