just finished this book and am puzzled by the ending, hoping someone can help me. atanas finds a cradle at his doorstep, baby demands to be rocked, his hand casts three shadows. and the novel ends, “the reader cannot be so stupid as to not remember what happened next”

also, who or what was Don Azeredo, and why all the letters to him and sudden focus on him 3/4 into the novel?
