🌋 Anak Krakatau erupted early Sunday, sending volcanic ash across western Indonesia and prompting a temporary suspension of operations at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
The eruption occurred at 03:53 local time. Authorities said the airport closure affected 209 flight movements and about 22,800 passengers, with cancellations, delays and diversions on domestic and international routes.
BMKG said satellite imagery showed ash clouds reaching 20,000 and 50,000 feet. Aviation warnings and airport decisions were being coordinated among meteorological, air-navigation and airport authorities. ✈️
No casualties or evacuation order were reported. Monitoring showed no sea-level anomaly around the Sunda Strait, but the event renewed attention on the volcano after its 2018 flank collapse triggered a tsunami that killed at least 430 people. Authorities said flight operations could change as ash conditions evolve.
