I've been riding on and off for 5 years now but most recently picked it back up 6 months ago. I'm looking into some courses I can take to improve my skills. Here are the courses I've taken since I started riding (those of you in California will probably know them): I've taken the intermediate PMT course, an offroad dirt bike course (Rich Oliver's Mystery school), a beginner's road racing course (Superbike Coach), and a supermoto course (SoCal Supermoto).
These courses range from $200-$450. I don't want to take more than 1, maybe 2, courses over the next 6-9 months so I wanted to see what y'all think I should be signing up for.
I'm in the Bay area and have a Vstrom 650 XT that I'd like to do everything with. I use it as a commuter, I'd like to go touring and motocamping (gravel/dirt roads) on it over the weekends, take it into the twisties here and there, and maybe even trackdays.
Here are my thoughts on each type of course:
\- Advanced PMT course: a lot of this is low speed stuff which I feel like doesn't need a whole lot of instruction and I can practice it on my own; I'm decent at it already. But there might be some emergency maneuver or braking techniques I could benefit from. I'm all about extra safety out there.
\- Offroad/dirtbike school: I think learning this is great for traction feel and management. I know what losing the rear feels like and generally know how to save it. I think seat time sliding around on low traction surface is a great way to improve your overall comfort on a motorcycle.
\- Roadracing course (but on a small kart track): I used to want to roadrace and love carving up corners occasionally (and safely). I'd like to lose the panniers on the Vstrom and take it to a track here and there this summer, so roadracing tech (race lines, throttle control, trailbraking, body positioning) would be super helpful for that but not sure how much would translate to my street riding.
\- Supermoto course: Unlikely to do this again. Very niche and just didn't learn much technique.
Other - ???: I could do Yamaha Champ or California Superbike school or join a trackday organization and just get more track time or do none of that and save my money.
So going back to my question - for where I'm at in my riding journey and what I like to do, which course do you think would be 1) most helpful as well as 2) most fun?
