We don't talk enough about the high rates of incarceration among African migrants in SA
The corrections department says about 12.5% (70% increase from 2015) of sentenced inmates in SA are migrants, this is taking into account high deportation numbers in 2024/25 of about 47000 (a 300% increase from 2021), more than France and Germany combined.
The 2022 census showed migrants account for 6.5% of the population in South Africa, meaning they're over-represented in the prison system by nearly 200%.
What do you think is the most viable solution to stopping growth and eventually reversing both deportations and incarceration rates?
