Are younger generations more open to discussing controversial books?
Hi, hope you're all okay! I am very new to this sub, so please tell me if this isn't allowed.
I had a conversation with my boss a couple days ago about some books we've read and ones we'd like to read. The conversation made me think about some stuff and whether it's my age or how we grew up has affected us. My boss is in her 40s and I'm 23, we both are obviously from different generations.
I started talking about Anthony Burgess who I studied some of his work during university. I said how one book we only touched on briefly was 'A Clockwork Orange' which has had controversy around it and the film itself banned in the past. I said I'd like to read it, mostly out of curiosity and being able to say I have with it being a well-known novel. I am aware of already some big themes in it and some not so nice points to it, which again comes from my time studying the author. My boss said 'it's not a book you walk around saying you've read.', as though it's a book that should be kept hushed.
Another kind thing to relate is I'm taking my dad to watch the 'Book of Mormon' musical this year, he loves south park and I thought this musical would be perfect. She commented again how 'it's not something to watch with your dad'.
Now i'm not hating on my boss, she's actually the nicest person ever and I love that we have books and musicals to talk about on shift. It just made think about all those other banned books or controversial ones, and I can't help but think if younger people are just more open to discussing them? It feels as though there are some older people who want to avoid those conversation topics altogether.
It might just be me being an open person, but it's a thought I had

PS: Just thought I'd add something, my boss told me the topics involved in the book at that point and we had no customers in the shop. She meant it as a book not to kind of gloat about reading, if that makes sense. We talk about a lot of stuff at work and are always careful if we have customers.
I also hope I haven't offended anyone, I'm worried I may have. It might again just be the kind of person I am too.
