Norway’s King Harald V has died aged 89, and his son Crown Prince Haakon has succeeded him immediately as King Haakon VIII. 🇳🇴 The palace said Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday morning.
Harald had been king since 1991 and was Europe’s oldest reigning monarch. Norway’s monarch is largely ceremonial, while political power rests with its elected parliament.
📰 The government announced national mourning, lowering flags and ringing church bells at midday. Haakon told the cabinet he would use the name Haakon VIII and is expected to take an accession oath before parliament in the coming days.
The succession comes as the royal family faces scrutiny over Queen Mette-Marit’s past contacts with Jeffrey Epstein and the conviction of her son Marius Borg Høiby. Haakon had already undertaken additional duties while his father’s health declined. ⚖️
