Satan's speech In Paradise Lost changed my views on authority.

This might come across as a little dramatic, but I can clearly see why Milton was sometimes thought to identify with Satan himself. While the speech initially seems pompous, reading it made me think about the way God is portrayed: tyrannical in ways that, if applied to a human being, would almost certainly be considered evil. Yet because God is presented as an all-powerful being, above everything else, he is not supposed to be questioned, and his creatures seem to follow him almost blindly.

It made me wonder how many people, when confronted with a great display of power, would simply bow and follow rather than question the motives of whoever holds that power. It also made me think about how humanity’s most dangerous weapon is the mind itself, and how blind faith can sometimes rob people of that weapon by discouraging questioning, doubt, and independent thought.
