Can't Help Myself
"No work of art has ever touched me as emotionally as this robotic arm. It is programmed to try to contain the constantly leaking hydraulic fluid it needs to keep functioning. If it loses too much, it will die, so it desperately fights to get it back and gain another day of life. The saddest part is that it has been given the ability to perform 'happy dances' for spectators. When the project was first launched, the robot would dance frequently, spending most of its time interacting with the audience, as it could quickly recover small leaks. But as the years have passed (as seen now in the video), it seems tired and hopeless, with no time to dance... Now it only has time to try to survive, as the amount of hydraulic fluid it is losing has become unbearable. It is living out its final days in an endless cycle of keeping itself alive and slowly bleeding out... (literally and figuratively, as the hydraulic fluid was deliberately made to look like real blood)."
"The robotic arm finally ran out of hydraulic fluid in 2019, slowly stopped and 'died'. And now I'm moved by a robotic arm ðŸ˜. It was programmed to live this fate, and no matter how hard it tried, it couldn't escape it. Viewers watched it slowly fade away until the day it stopped moving forever. To say 'this resonates' doesn't even do it justice, in my opinion. Created by Sun Yuan & Peng Yu, they called the piece 'Can't Help Myself'. What a masterpiece. What a message."
Broader interpretations: The hydraulic fluid could symbolize how we mentally and physically burn out for money, trying to survive. How the system is designed to fail us, to trap us and steal the best years of our lives, playing the game that the richest people in the world have built. How it robs us of our happiness, our passion and our inner peace. How we slowly drown under the weight of responsibilities, with more and more expectations and less rewards. And how, as the years go by, we have less and less free time to enjoy life. There is really no escape from this system, and our fate seems already mapped out from birth. We give and give, and then we are forgotten... Loved and respected as long as we are useful, then, one day, we are no longer useful and become a burden. How our young and free spirit is stolen as we are swallowed up by a broken system. It can also represent the cycle of human life and remind us that none of us make it out of this world alive. But it also reminds us to heal, rest, and love with all our hearts. The constant search for 'more' is not necessary to find true inner happiness."
