I work with my hands for a living, and 90% of the time I’ve got my noise cancelling headphones on and I’m listening to an audiobook, or sometimes a podcast.
True crime, biographies, fantasy, thrillers, history, nonfiction, sci-fi, even screenplays. I love it all. However, I recently obtained an erotic literature audio collection (recommended by a friend) and I’m beside myself, unable to enjoy the story or the characters. It’s the GAZE. Or, in my head during a listen, the GAYS.
Let me explain with an example.
\*“His gaze lingered on her breasts long than necessary. Her gaze fell upon his manhood; fully erect in the moonlight”\*
I don’t know if it’s just me and my limited knowledge of the world but in my head, listening to the audio, all I hear and picture is this:
\*“His gays lingered upon her breasts longer than necessary. Her gays fell upon his manhood, fully erect in the moonlight”.\*
I CANT STOP LAUGHING. The author’s scenario is cheesy and flirty. Fine.
But the scene my brain comes up with (GAZE VS GAYS) because of the homonym… I picture each character having their own gay friends who are fully participating throughout the romance story (how many times can an author really use the word GAZE?? It barely ever comes up in normal speech!).
What I hear: His gays? Appreciative of the breasts but maybe a bit concerned that she’s paired an 18th century corset with a bodice from a hundred years previous. Her gays?? Lusty, and apparently claimed her lover first in this case.
It totally changes the story and I’m both delighted and appalled. Erotic literature is forever ruined for me now #entertainment source
