Humanitarian conditions in El Obeid, Sudan, are worsening as civilians flee fighting in the Kordofan region. More than 15,000 families have arrived since mid-July, following more than 200,000 arrivals in the first half of 2026. 🚨
The influx is straining a city already affected by damaged water infrastructure, high food prices and attacks that have disrupted fuel, transport and health services. The UN has warned that shortages of clean water increase the risk of waterborne disease.
El Obeid’s position as North Kordofan’s capital and a transport hub makes the pressure especially consequential: fighting around the city can restrict movement of people, aid and supplies across central and western Sudan. 💧
The UN has called for protection of civilians and unhindered humanitarian access. Aid operations continue, but insecurity and underfunding remain obstacles as displacement continues.
