Why does Chinese food sometimes make your mouth feel numb and tingly? Is that normal?
I was eating at a Sichuan restaurant last week and had this experience where after a few bites, my mouth started feeling really strange - kind of numb and tingly, almost like it was vibrating? It wasn't painful or anything, just really weird and unexpected. My date thought I was having an allergic reaction and got worried, but the waiter said it was totally normal and part of how the food is supposed to taste.
Is this actually a thing? What causes it? I'm not allergic to anything that I know of, and I eat spicy food all the time without issues. This was different from the normal "spicy hot" feeling you get from hot sauce or jalapeños. It almost felt like when your foot falls asleep, but in my mouth. Some of the food had what looked like little brown peppercorns in it - could that be related?
I'm genuinely curious because I've never experienced anything like this before. Is it some kind of spice or ingredient that's specifically used in Chinese cooking? and is it safe? Like I said, it didn't hurt or make me feel sick, it was just really bizarre. #conversation source
