Anne Carson Autobiography of Red was the first book I read…

Anne Carson

Autobiography of Red was the first book I read at the beginning of this year and I really enjoyed it, I knew nothing of her work and never heard of her before I picked up that book a few months ago and I really liked her writing style and her subtle metaphors and similes, my favorite even after all the others I've read was "Numb, as if caught between the tongue and the taste." but for a while I didn't feel the need to read any more of her books until I saw more of them at the book store so I decided to pick them up. I've read her translations of Sappho poetry, Plainwater and Men in the Off Hours and I do have Wrong Norma but have yet to read it. It's rare for me to find a writer that makes me want to learn how to read another language, Fernando Pessoa and Clarice Lispector made me want to learn Portuguese and now Anne Carson makes me want to learn how to read Greek and a bit of French since she talks about Antonin Artuad a lot in Men in the Off Hours and I've been looking for an excuse to re-read his writings again. I haven't really looked into Anne Carson as a person so I don't know if any fact about her is common knowledge or about her writing techniques but I felt, in my own view, that when she writes her own original writings she perhaps writes it originally in Greek, or some other language, then translates it into English but keeps some of the grammatic properties of the other language in the translation, as if there are no attempts to make her writings appeasing to modern audiences rather she keeps the meaning of the original language and focuses on that more than if it would make sense to someone who only speaks modern English, if that makes sense. Not a critique at all, I actually really enjoyed reading her stuff and he way of bringing new perspectives on other well known writers, thinkers and the worlds they were brought up in.

If anyone else has read her works I'd love to know your thoughts.
