Reevaluating Marilyn Manson.

He made a big splash when I was in high school in the early 2000s. Outside of 'beautiful people' and 'rock is dead' from the matrix soundtrack I never gave him much thought. He was weird. Overly weird. Dressing a female. Album artwork showed people drinking piss from a device hooked up to his cock. Really wild stuff.

Couple this with the rumors of him being a satanist and I honestly never wanted anything to do with him. Not that I'm religious at all -- quite far from it.

It wasn't until many many years later that I decided to give him a chance and do a little digging. What I found was pretty nuts.

Not only was the dude not a devil worshiper, but he often sang very pro Christian songs. Personal Jesus, God's gonna cut you down, The reflecting god, sacrilegous, etc. Most of these were covers, but even his original songs more often than not focused on healing from pain and escaping hell rather than the inverse.

So what was he really?

He was an incredibly smart man who used shock value, not only to gain popularity, but to also gather the kids who were really hurting the most and would be attracted to a figure like him. The goth kids, the edgelords looking at suicide, the teens who knew nothing but an existence of pain saw this rock star supposedly embracing the devil and defying god and worshipped him. He gathered the young that were hurting the most and got them to pay attention to his surprisingly very positive and healing words. Something that wouldn't have been possible without his crazy on stage persona. It was basically the reason he was able to penetrate their defenses and get through to them.

So here we have it 25 years later I'm finally listening to Marilyn Manson songs and have a new found respect for the guy. He genuinely deserves an award for humanitarianism or something. Also his music is actually not bad at all. Finding myself really enjoying a lot of his singles.

"I wanna live. I wanna love. But its a long hard road out of hell"

What do you guys think of him?
