How midfield points are dependent on top team DNFs
As the season progresses, the top teams begins to settle in. In the first races midfield teams had good opportunities to acquire meaningful points.
We investigated how placements in the constructors' midfield were dependent on race weekends where top team cars had to retire. Midfield teams have on paper only access to very spare points every weekend, however when a DNF in a top team occurs, the pool of points opens up.
As the season 2026 progresses, the top teams begin to settle in. In the first races, midfield teams had good opportunities to acquire meaningful points, which could favour them highly in the championship, already making it a difference between P6 and P9. It is much harder for midfield teams to catch up on eachother. However big opporunities arise when top teams make bad strategy calls (Canada) or have to DNF. A midfield car can capitalise on these moments with a standout weekend, building a gap to its nearest rivals that will be difficult to claw back.
We wrote a quick piece on it looking back at the last 5 years. The goal of the piece is to give a better understanding of why midfield teams are more likely to do big gambles, and why one big gamble with a big payoff can set them apart from the other midfield teams in the season. Hope you will enjoy it.
