What was your most critical lesson that you learned the hard way?

I over eagerly as well as naively and maybe negligently made a spur of the moment decision to stay off a forest road pretty close the interstate as I was traveling home from out of state. I’ll give myself some leniency due to the fact that we have been dealing with family crisis and my executive execution hasn’t been as strong. Well while chatting a cute girl and being excited to find a beautiful spot in one of my favorite forests I neglected to have checked the weather.

So here’s the play by play

>be me drivin’ an 06 rear wheel e-250 into the woods after dark
>find an incredible spot + miles in at a gravel pull off
>notice there is nice fire ring just off the road; notice there is a beautiful creek only about 30-40’ past the ring; get excited and fantasize about how vibes the morning coffee will be and how cozy a fire I could enjoy from the van would be as well
>easily execute the approach. No problems whatsoever
>collect plenty a dry wood and tender, but taking in a lot of what I was coming across was damp. Thought crossed mind that this could be a more difficult fire than usual.
>make multiple attempts to sustain ultimately finding no success . Opt for bed, fantasizing that morning coffee and view.
>wake up to light rain; Think about moving the van back to the access road only about 30’ away. Lazily consider that the rain is light and will probably pass. Fall back asleep
>wake up about an hour later to more rain
>consider the consequences of more bad weather and decide to move.
>Proceed to get bogged down while lacking tools to remediate
>no longer have the consistent single bar of service I entered with; it does show periodically in the right spots tho
>spend next 2+ hours calling for help
>get a tow company out to my location
>get pulled out in like 10min

Lessons learned for myself and my current rig:

**ALWAYS**, no matter what, check the weather (normally something I would not overlook)

Absolutely **never** get off a main access in even the slightest wet weather until I install my ~~wench~~ *winch*

Take preventative action **immediately** when encountering what could be a potentially dangerous situation

Always share a location with someone, **no matter** how *simple* the excursion seems

**Learn how to use** this satellite connection business I guess I get thru my Verizon plan

Don’t let distractions compromise safety!

Be safe out there yall!

I’m glad I at least acted when I did bc it took me almost exiting the service road access till I got any cell service this morning and I messed up a portion of today’s plans by over sleeping.
