By controversial, i mean an author that either has or had extreme views, or is known for their wrongdoings.
My pick is 'Journey to the end of the night' by Louis-Ferdinand Celine, who was accused of being an antisemite and a nazi sympathizer. Regardless of that, the chosen novel is undoubtedly a literary masterpiece.
