💡 SCIENCE BEHIND THE ILLUSION:
This is caused by lateral inhibition in retinal ganglion cells. Receptors viewing intersections receive inhibitory signals from all four sides, whereas receptors on streets receive inhibition from only two sides. When you fixate directly, the high foveal resolution overrides the effect.
