Harvard University has agreed to pay $53 million to settle lawsuits from families whose loved ones donated their bodies to Harvard Medical School, only for parts of some cadavers to be stolen and sold on the black market. Former morgue manager Cedric Lodge admitted to stealing remains including heads, brains, skin and hands between 2018 and 2020 and was sentenced to eight years in prison. The families accused Harvard of failing to detect the scheme for years. As part of the settlement, Harvard Medical School will also formally condemn what happened and create an annual scholarship honoring anatomical donors.
