I was always told it’s “more work but less expensive to cook from scratch than buying premade products.” My grocery bill says otherwise.

It sucks because homemade truly does taste better, but it costs almost twice as much in this Alfredo sauce example, which is what everyone uses as their argument **for** cooking from scratch. I can’t count the number of times someone told me: “pasta sauce from a jar? Why would you do that! It’s way cheaper to make from scratch!”

It’s not just limited to pasta sauce either. Things like marinades? I can get $2.50 of premade marinade, or I can spend about $15-$20 on ingredients that might make two batches.

I have been trying to cook from scratch to add some flavor and variety to dinner, but it’s just not financially possible. My grocery bill went from \~$120/week to $180-$250 /week depending on what I want to make.

Honestly? At this point I could seriously justify eating food from out more often if I wanted to. Fast food dinner for two is about $17 on average when we get food from out. Eating food from out 7 times a week would be unhealthy but it *would* be less time *and* effort than cooking which is insane to me.
