A fire aboard the Liberia-flagged cargo ship Ocean Melody killed 25 people while it was being repaired at Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding in eastern China. 🚢
Chinese state media said 42 people were aboard when the fire began at about 11:15 a.m. on Thursday. Twelve were evacuated safely and five injured people were taken to hospital in stable condition.
The blaze was extinguished by about 2:30 p.m. Rescuers later found all 25 people initially reported missing dead, according to RTHK and the Associated Press.
President Xi Jinping called for an investigation and accountability measures, while Premier Li Qiang urged treatment for the injured and prevention of secondary disasters. Authorities had not publicly established the cause of the fire in the initial reports. ⚠️
