Saw some posts recently about how Pakistani genz should be also going out and protesting and what not. My question is really simple: why?
I come from a lower middle class family and I did everything by the book. I used to go to a local school until I got good grades and got a full scholarship for A-Levels. Then for university, I was doing part time jobs with my studies and well, things worked out and I graduated from one of the top universities in Pakistan but it was also during this time, when I saw my grandfather slowly dying because we couldn't afford better treatment. Later on, I went for an internship abroad as well (again, fully funded by the host country) around a year ago where I've been offered a funded masters and I'm currently in the process of getting a study permit.
But here's the truth I can't tell anyone (not even my family): I don't want to go for a masters and spend the next 7-8 years of my life chasing a PR. I don't want to leave my family. I want to be able to spend more time with my parents and sisters but unfortunately I can't. Why can't I stay? Because I live in a shithole where I don't have even the slightest security about what might go wrong tomorrow. My father has been paying taxes all his life, our family has no criminal record or anything but what has this country done for me? I can't think of one solid point.
I would've loved to stay in this country even if I was a little hopeful that this place was going to improve but you don't need to be a genius to realize that it's only getting worse. You can be fucked at any moment by the army using the vigos, the mullahs using blasphemy laws and the politicians feeding on our money.
Then we love to talk about culture and traditions when it's all complete bulshit. Out of 145 countries, Pakistan was ranked third last in terms of gender gap. On top of that, we know how bad the religious extremism is. Knowing how shitty the general mindset is, it should make us all worried about how are we supposed to get married and raise daughters in a place like this but that also seems to be the least of our concerns right now.
So yes, I don't feel any moral obligation to go out and protest for a society as fucked up as this one and I'll go on to say that I feel more patriotic for a country which is funding my masters even as an immigrant instead of my so called homeland. #local #current_events source
