That time with I got the school bible study class to discuss trans people

So I go to a Christian school. Also a school that almost got into legal trouble over policies around trans people and one specific incident. One time every week has some options between some sport, or like independent study, or in my case, Year 11/12 Bible studies. Picked the option because I like debating religion and like learning more than anything (I’m agnostic, but there’s been a lot of Christian influence in my life from family and school).

How the teacher runs it is that everyone can submit questions that we discuss in order. Earlier this year was when I first *seriously* questioned my gender, and so with that front and centre in my mind, the question came into my mind about if the Bible even says anything. Did a little myself, but the teacher who runs it has a lot of biblical knowledge and has done classes in this and that about religious studies. I’m the sort to ask way more ‘controversial’ questions, so I posted the following question, trying to keep it as inoffensive to the class as well.

>From my limited research, the only thing I could find relating to being transgender and the other gender vs sex related progressive views is an old testament verse about not wearing the opposite sex's clothing. What does the Bible say about all that in full.

(Please forgive my lack of a question mark, and the weird indirect wording)

So the day of that class finally comes around, and in fact, there’s nothing from him or anyone else in the class of biblical reasoning, despite christian values being something that always gets held as the reason. There’s a bit on clothing in the Old Testament, but he is HARD “the Old Testament fulfilled in full” so they don’t matter anyway. Was that the end, and trans people are a-ok in everyone’s books now? Unfortunately no.

When that part ended, it went to attempting other anti-trans justification. I don’t remember everything very well, but the rest basically rested on “hey this one person got rushed through it and detransitioned later“ \[and so all doctors doing this stuff are bad was implied\], and “let’s compare this to some medical condition or another that has nothing to do with identity, we wouldn’t give them surgery but therapy, so obviously we should just get trans people into therapy to be untransed, cause it needs fixing not support”.

So yeah learning it’s all just not very strong arguments for baseless disliking. Sure doesnt help alongside my insane insecurities for being able to do anything gender affirming for myself publicly, but one day I’ll graduate lol.

On a side note, unit 3 has an argumentative presentation assignment for English that should be centred around something controversial, and we literally got shown an example in class for a previous assignment of someone doing trans people allowed in bathrooms for earlier years, so I am dead set on making a pro-transgender argument then. If it goes well I might post that one next year.
