Can I be a freelance artist on a permit for work in Germany?
Can I be a freelance artist (aka sell my work and be legally covered) on a permit for work in Germany?
I have just been granted a resident permit for skilled work purposes this week (yay!). My job is based in events , exhibitions and creative communications. I haven't collected my resident card yet, but the paper the authorities gave me says ' *Selbstständige Tätigkeit gestattet' ,* ( self employment permitted). I have also been a practicing artist for 5 years, and mentioned this in my permit application too.
I have a number of international shows coming up in the next year period, some of which are funded by art councils etc, and were planned before I moved to Berlin last year. ( I moved from England in June 2025).
Does anyone know how I go about registering myself as an artist, on a self-employment basis, so I can invoice and receive international payments for my work legally and correctly? I would contact the authorities, but since it took me 8 months to get the permit, I have no doubts that it will take a while to receive a response haha!
Any advice is appreciated !
