Colombia’s earthquake search has entered what officials call its final phase, with the reported death toll reaching at least 265. Rescue crews are continuing to search collapsed buildings in Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Quibdó. 🕯️

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck near San José del Palmar on 10 August. The Servicio Geológico Colombiano initially assessed it at magnitude 6.7 before updating the estimate to 7.4; it called the event the country’s strongest recorded this century.
The response is being hindered by damaged roads, lost mobile service and the remoteness of parts of Chocó. The government has declared an economic emergency and says it plans a reconstruction fund for homes, schools, hospitals and infrastructure.
