Is it bad that i enjoy reading fanfiction to lower anxiety and "turn off my brain"?
I have not been a huge reader, but I read a lot of fanfiction of video games I play, mostly where the author takes the existing characters and make them do different things that diverge from the official canon, or even go on another adventure after the official canon, as if the author is writing a sequel to the game it is based on.
It gives me a sense of comfort especially on the nights where i just can't sleep, mainly because i am already familiar with the characters and setting but still giving me the "novelty" factor since again, they don't do stuffs I see in canon.
Now I also recently try to read more serious works , like reading 1984 and The Man in the High Castle, and Roadside Picnic. While I appreciate the experience and would like to do it more, I notice it just doesn't give me the same benefits as reading fanfiction. I learn about new setting and ideas yes, but it is actually relatively exhausting for me to do instead of relaxing or calming...like after 2-3 hours, i wanna go back to read my silly fanfiction.
I suppose I feel guilty that reading these books for me are not something I can constantly do, that it is a challenging task that I only afford to do occasionally . Makes me feel that I'm rather...eh unsophisticated or uncouth I suppose? #entertainment source
