How best to learn git? My team's code is in shambles
My team at work has a real messy local environment situation. We are by no means software engineers. We're reliability analysts who use python scripts to do the heavy lifting for us. At first we used Jupyter Hub with simple python scripts (read data, calculate, spit out chart). Then a couple years ago we had an ambitious manager with serious programming chops who transitioned us over to git, version control, and local environment setups on Visual Studio Code.
Everything went well as long as this manager was around to help us fix bugs and VSC errors. Over time, the pull requests from my manager got more and more complex and frankly the team couldn't keep up. We stopped doing our own development because the code was at a higher level than we could work with. Then our manager was promoted to another team and left all this in our hands.
We could always go back to Jupyter Hub, but I'd hate to waste our progress. We really have gotten a little better at programming, we just don't understand git well enough to clean up the mess. We can figure out the object oriented code with a little studying. But I don't know where to start fixing all the errors in VSC. I suspect it would be easier if I understood git.
My company has a great tuition reimbursement program. Is there a class I can take to get a handle on this? A git certification? A software development class? Would a textbook be better? Is there a comprehensive youtube course?
This is so frustrating I'm willing to study this on my own time just to be able to solve this.
