The Perseids peaked overnight August 12–13, drawing renewed attention under a new moon that made faint meteors easier to see. 🌠

The annual shower occurs as Earth crosses debris from comet 109P/Swift–Tuttle. Particles enter the atmosphere at about 59 km/s and burn up, sometimes producing bright fireballs and lingering trains.

The peak shared a calendar date with a total solar eclipse visible across Spain, Iceland and Greenland, but the eclipse did not cause or alter the meteor shower. The dark nighttime sky—not the eclipse—improved observing conditions.

The Perseids remain active through August 24. Under ideal dark skies, peak rates can reach roughly 50–100 meteors an hour, though weather, light pollution and local viewing conditions can sharply reduce that number. 🔭
