My interpretation of the novel, considering the title is that Istvan lived his whole life just as a piece of flesh. No introspection, no deeper thoughts, just going through it absurdly and impulsively with the inertia of a piece of flesh. And i think this could be a critique to how a lot of men are also living nowadays due to a patriarchal society that has encouraged and evolved over the years to make men numb. And numb as he was, he was able to get love, money and in the end lose it all. Sounds absurd, but that’s how life is.
Although i think that his behavior as a piece of walking flesh stems deeper than just our conflicting societal value. He is an intelligent man, and also empathetic with as much as you can deduct from his actions, although they seem lifeless, but he was abused and groomed by an older woman, who used him as a piece of flesh, something he never actually got over and continued living his life as such, arrested in that phase his whole life. #entertainment source
